TOKYO, Sept. 20 – An average viewer rating of Monday’s World Boxing Council (WBC) super flyweight interim championship match between Japan’s Katsushige Kawashima and Christian Mijares of Mexico was found to have shown an average viewer rating of a fine 11.3%, television officials said Wednesday.

According to the officials of TV TOKYO, which televised the bout in a prime time at night, it was the first time in about four years that TV TOKYO’s boxing program had attained double-digit figures. The maximum rating of the 12-round bout at Pacifico Yokohama, in which Mijares earned a split decision, was 13.4%, they said.
The fact that former world lightweight champion “Guts” Ishimatsu, who acted as a television commentator for the bout, disclosed his scoring of the fight after each round contributed greatly to the high viewer ratings especially when fans have lots of misgivings about judges’ scoring of world title fights following last month’s World Boxing Association light flyweight championship bout.
In the Aug. 2 fight, many ringsiders and television viewers thought Venezuelan Juan Landaeta had clearly won the bout, two of the three judges scored the fight in favor of popular Koki Kameda of Japan, which touched off a nationwide drive to condemn the boxing world in general and the judges in particular
In Monday’s fight, Ishimatsu scored the fight 114-113 in favor of Mijares. His scoring was exactly the same as that of two American judges. The third American judge saw it 114-113 for Kawashima.
Ishimatsu, who lashed out at the Kameda-Landaeta scoring on TV, in newspapers and magazines, accepted the TV TOKYO’s request to serve as a commentator on condition that he openly score the fight.
In recent years, a television commentator has not disclosed his scoring after each round lest television fans be influenced by the commentator's scoring.
